The Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem is an Islamic shrine, which was built at the end of the seventh century, after the Muslim conquest of the city at the beginning of that century.
The site is a big beautiful golden dome, which in the middle of it lays a big rock, which is holy to Muslims.
In general the dome is a holy place for Muslims, and they consider the ground under the Dome to be sacred, when it is located in the Temple Mount, as named by the Jews and Christians.
Non-Muslims are allowed to enter and visit the dome the Al-Aqsa mosque, which is a part of the site, after buying tickets author Palestinian Authority. The temple mount is one of the greatest landmarks in Jerusalem, when the rock is at the center of the dome.
The Muslims believe that the rock is the place which from Muhammad got to heaven to God. The Jews and Christians believe that the site is where Abraham almost sacrificed his son Isaac. There is also a belief that the rock that lies under the dome is the first stone that was laid in the building of the world. The Dome of the Rock was built by Byzantine from Constantinople that was sent by the Byzantine Emperor, for Caliph Abd al-Malik. It is considered to be an excellent example of middle Byzantine art. A massive program of renovation has taken place in 1955, by the Jordan government. The money for this move was collected by Arab governments and Turkey. As a part of the restore move in 1960, the dome was covered with a durable aluminum and bronze alloy that was made in Italy. The whole restoration process was completed in 1964. In 1998, with a donation of 8.2 million dollars from the Jordan King Hussein, the golden covering of the dome was refurbished.
