The currency in the State of Israel is the New Israel Shekel (NIS) (or shekel / shekels for short). One shekel is equal to 100 agorot. The sums of money, in local or foreign currency, that can be brought into the country are unlimited, from cash and credit cards to traveler's checks. Exchanging of currency can be done almost in every hotel, which is in adding to the change spots at the airport, banks, post offices and change agencies that can be found in all of the big cities.
The rate of the exchange is different from one change spot to another, and if you exchange in a bank you'll be charged by commission. If you hold an international credit card you can make withdraw of local currency at every bank and every Automatic Teller Machine.
You can find branches of various banks in every big city or small community. In order to exchange traveler's checks you have to show your passport.
When you like to exchange shekels back to a foreign currency you can do it at the airport banks, and the sum is limited up to 500 US dollars, or the same amount in other required currencies. Remaining sums of Israeli money over 500 US dollars, may be reconverted (with a restraint of up to 5000 US dollars) only with a bank receipt, to prove the conversion that has been made before.
