Ashkelon is a city in the southern region of the Israeli coast. In the ancient times the city was Philistine seaport on the Mediterranean Sea north of Gaza. In its former position the place was an Arab town called, Al Majdal, which was described as a large village in the 16th century.
In 1949, a year after the Israelis declared Independence, the town got the new name Migdal Gaza, and then Migdal Gad. Soon afterwards it became Migdal Ashkelon. Only in 1953 the current name, Ashkelon, was adopted.
The city is populated by over 117,000 people and considered to be the 8th largest city in Israel. In addition it is being rebuilt in new lines of architecture along with buildings such as a culture hall and a sports complex.
One of the most attractive sites in the city is no doubt, the beach that attracts many tourists along with a big crowd of local people. It is one of the beautiful in the country and it is spreads over 10 km. The city's marina is a docking place for about 600 vessel, when it is considered to be one of the major ones in the country. In addition there are some hotels and resorts with that south Mediterranean spear special. You can also find great swimming pools, country clubs and heated pools. Among the attractive places to you must visit in Ashkelon, there is also the city's water park which called Ashkeluna.
The city is also famous, in a world level, due to its large number of available tennis courts in the city's tennis club. The club is a beautiful relaxing playing location due to the views, sunny days and sea breeze. In the sports attractions there are also bowling alleys, sports facilities and fishing spots. There are lots of shopping centers restaurants, clubs, movie theaters, museums, pubs and more attractive entertainments. Another place that can get into the favorites list is the Arab hotel where there's the Ashkelon history museum. The place also operates an art gallery, a restaurant and a coffee shop.
